Highlander by Cathleen Ross

Author Cathleen Ross gave us this interesting insight into this medieval romance novel’s creation:

I was on holiday in Aspen and had this dream that a man came to me. In the dream he told me that he was Scottish and his name was James. He had been dispossessed of his land and he’d joined forces with others to fight to get it back. The odd thing is when I woke up he was still talking to me. By the time I’d finished talking to him, I had the whole story in my head and wrote it over the next three days. I also did internet research to try and discover if and when this event happened in Scotland. I discovered, ‘The Black Douglas’, whose first name was James had joined forces with Robert the Bruce and fought alongside him his whole life helping establish Robert of the king of Scotland. I set my story in 1308. To set up a strong conflict i had my heroine’s family fighting for John Balliol’s cause against Robert the Bruce’s.

I knew I had to write his story, but being a romance writer, I wanted to make it romantic so I invented my heroine, Lady Isobel McLaird who is married off to James.
